And Victoriously
God: You are not the things you do. You are who you are.
Me: But who am I?
God: That's what you're gonna have to find out.
Me: How?
God: Simply live your life. Live boldly, courageously, and victoriously.

Favorite Albums and Films of 2011
12 Favorite Albums 12. Drake - Take Care Okay, so Drake is complaining and whining about his first world problems and celebritydom here. And really, it’s an 18-track, hour long hissy fit of an entitled 10-year-old rapper. But man, his vocals got sick! No seriously, both Drake’s singing and rapping took a huge upswing and his technical skills got much better–you can tell he’s...

Open Your Eyes: Luck? →
kryptonite30: I crossed a busy street my myself before I could even walk and I got out without a scratch. I got boiling water knocked onto my body and left with a few burn marks that aren’t easily visible.  I got put into a private school and learned discipline at a very young age. I was placed into a test prep class and grinded my way into Staten Island Technical High School. I met an...

UPRISING
Enemy-occupied territory—that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage. When you go to church you are really listening—in to the secret wireless from our friends: that is why the enemy is so anxious to prevent us from going. -C.S. Lewis ...

Who I discovering I am think
I used to blog incessantly but nowadays, it’s not that I have nothing to say but rather, I want what I say to be worthwhile, anointed, and meaningful. I guess in my striving to be this certain persona or be received in a certain way, I expelled the rhetoric that would best paint me in that light. But then, Christ had to come along and fuck shit up. I had a game plan dammit! Now, I have no...

Nowhere do I want to remain folded
The poem I wish I had written. My favorite only because I had felt and thought every line before I ever read them. ——— I am too alone in the world, and yet not alone enough by Rainer Maria Rilke I am too alone in the world, and yet not alone enough to make every hour holy. I am too small in the world, and yet not tiny enough just to stand before you like a thing, dark...

Common Misconception
I was gonna drop my two cents on this whole controversy over Common being invited to the White House by Michelle Obama but Jon Stewart pretty much sums it up best. (Watch the 2nd video for his mad ill spoken word)

Welcome Back Lynne, We Missed You Terribly
Lynne Ramsay is finally back with her latest film, We Need To Talk About Kevin, an adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s book about a mother dealing with the aftermath of a school shooting that her son was responsible for. Ramsay hasn’t directed a film in 10 years and has just two features under her belt: 1999’s Ratcatcher and 2001’s Morvern Callar, two of my favorites....

That Look
I love that Look on parents’ faces when their kids are being super cute. I see it in plydia all the time and I’ve been seeing it in my sister more and more. It’s this Look that comes on whenever their kid does or says something irresistibly adorable in front of people. Whether it be an infant’s clumsy smile or a toddler’s hilarious observation, the people watching...

Good Plumbing>SXSW
After seeing photos and videos from this year’s SXSW and reading about all the musicians and films that were showcased there, those old ambitions of wanting to make it and be recognized start to creep in again. I read about the camaraderie of musicians backstage and I say, “I wish I could be part of that.” I look at all the new films being screened and I say, “Don’t...

Since I Made a Turn-About Face
There’s a lot of unexpected (and still relevant) wisdom in the old church songs we used to sing as kids. Little By Little Little by little, every day Little by little, every day My Jesus is changing me (Oh He’s changing me) Since I made a turn-about face I’ve been growing in His grace My Jesus is changing me Oh He’s changing me My precious Jesus I’m not the same...

Thoughts on 83rd Oscars
-Best Picture: The King’s Speech Look, I loved this movie but it was total Oscar-bait. And this is a movie that could’ve been made a decade ago. The Social Network could ONLY have been made in this day and age. It is so reflective of what’s happening RIGHT NOW. Additionally, it was just a better movie. Network got snubbed. And I’m pretty sure the Weinsteins...

A bday gift
Today I woke up to a thunderous violent rain storm rhythmically banging against my window. Usually I never hear the pitter-patter of rain because our bedroom window is at a funny angle. But this time I heard all of it. I just laid in bed listening and falling asleep, listening and waking up, listening and falling asleep. One of my favorite things in the world. Thanks God.

Nostalgia Entry #0002: TGIF
You know what I miss? TGIF on ABC. It was on every Friday, from 8pm to 10pm, a 2-hour block of quality sitcoms that the whole family could enjoy. Boy did I love it. I looked forward to it all week and was so sad when the last show of the night was over. During junior high, I’d be in class, just kinda lazily sloshing through the interminable class periods when all of a sudden I would...

monkey's stubborn hand
Having balled his hand into a tight unprying fist around the object of his desire, he didn’t dare dream of his left arm ever loosened. Not because he didn’t want to, but because he couldn’t. He was unable to imagine the freedom of using both arms– to hug, to carry, to climb. He used to love swimming but now the splashing water was echoing and distant.
 As his Father rang the...

Shocked by Joy
So on Saturday, I discussed the issue of Character, based on Pastor Joe’s sermon, with my high school small group. After the discussion, we had a time of prayer where they had a chance to repent for their bad character and ask God to build good character. Here were some of their prayers: “God, I want to do this so I can put You first in my heart.” “God, I pray that I...

Childhood Memories Thru a Video Console
I think that when we get to heaven, there will be this colossal video playback console where we can watch, cycle through, and ultimately relive our entire lives on earth. You can replay every single moment, however small or significant. You can even see it in slow-motion, with multiple angles, an audio commentary with your thoughts, and there will be an awesome behind-the-scenes featurette...

So there I was at Hammerstein Ballroom, seeing Switchfoot live for the 2nd time (the first being at Creation Fest in PA). I was a big fan back when I first heard “New Way To Be Human” and had “Learning To Breathe” on repeat. But I started losing interest when they were all up on “A Walk To Remember”- maybe it was their proximity to Mandy Moore. Anyway, I was...

I want to go on a Holiday at the Sea
Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he...

My Top 12 Favorite Films of 2010
12. The American The first assassin film I’ve seen that is paced languidly and evenly rather than hyperactively. And it works so well because this is not a plot-driven story, it’s completely character-driven and everything, from the camera to the editing, reflects the character’s personality and demeanor. Even with the steadier pace, it still manages to be as heart-stopping as...

In Re-Thinking the Point of All This
So I’ve been wanting to get back into blogging again. And just writing in general. It’s really been a while. After being tied up with big projects, I just feel so drained at the end of it that even thinking about writing a new blog entry tires me out. And there’s also this whole thing with not really knowing what to write about anymore. Which is really about purpose. In my teens, I was so...

For anyone that knows me, one thing that’s clear is my madly obsessive love for movies. By the time a new film is released, especially one that I am excited about, I have already scoured the internet for every last bit and scrap of information on the production, cast, crew, and script. So while most people will look forward to a new movie once they’ve seen the trailer or poster, I have...

Nostalgia Entry #0001: Compact Discs
You know what I miss? CD’s. I miss climbing over my backyard fence and running to Nobody Beats The Wiz to buy the No Doubt CD (Tragic Kingdom was the first album I ever purchased!) that my friend was raving about, knowing that if I owned it, I’d be one step closer to that elusive status of “cool”. I miss browsing through the album covers for hours and looking at the...

An Open Letter to Kesha Sebert aka Ke$ha
(NaPoWriMo 2010 - 21/30) Dear Ke$ha, Firstly, I just want to say that your songs are catchy. “Brush my teeth with a bottle of jack” is undoubtedly a snazzy line that will remain in my head for longer than I’d like.
