-Best Picture: The King’s Speech
Look, I loved this movie but it was total Oscar-bait. And this is a movie that could’ve been made a decade ago. The Social Network could ONLY have been made in this day and age. It is so reflective of what’s happening RIGHT NOW. Additionally, it was just a better movie. Network got snubbed. And I’m pretty sure the Weinsteins threatened/bribed Academy voters- I mean look at them, they look like mobsters. Jewish mobsters.
-Best Director: Tom Hooper
FINCHER THIS WAS YOUR YEAR!!! By now, his endless takes and meticulous attention to detail have become almost a joke but it still tells of his impressive artistry. This was his time to grab an Oscar and join that pantheon. But it’s okay, Kubrick never won either so he’s in good company. Can’t wait for his take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
-Best Actress/Actor in a Leading Role: Natalie Portman, Colin Firth
Totally deserved for both. Colin was hilarious and just delightful- he had to know he was gonna win because that speech was way too good to have been improvised (unless he really is that delightful- it was the second best speech of the night). And Natalie even thanked her A.D. and freakin’ camera operators! What class.
-Best Actress/Actor in a Supporting Role: Melissa Leo, Christian Bale
Everyone knew Bale was gonna win but I wanted to see Helena Bonham Carter clinch it. She’s been playing all these whacky roles lately for her husband, Tim Burton, but this was a nice departure into a more classy and refined role. And she delivered so excellently and gracefully. I like Melissa Leo but her performance was more about the accent, showing her cleavage, and acting tough.
-Best Cinematography: Wally Pfister, Inception
Yeah, Wally did an amazing job and the photography in Inception was awesome. But Roger Deakins’ work in True Grit was nothing short of gorgeous. That opening shot! Roger’s been nominated NINE times and still hasn’t won. Let’s hope he doesn’t become the Peter O’Toole of Oscar nominees.
-Best speech of the night: David Seidler, Best Original Screenplay for The King’s Speech
Warm, gracious, grateful, and he honored his daughter. From the man who wrote the movie on them, that’s how a speech is done.
-The Hosts: Anne Hathaway & James Franco
Where was the chemistry? The witty banter? The choreography? Anything that showed that they actually prepared more than just the previous night?
The second time Anne made some off-handed fawning comment/joke/remark to look all cute and excited just to be on TV, it was annoying. By the tenth time, I wanted to shoot her. She wasn’t AS cringe-worthy as I expected but still… that perky charisma is too much. And if you wanna do a song-and-dance number, take lessons from Hugh, not just blankly make fun of him.
And who allowed Franco to smoke his entire stash of weed before the show?? Dude couldn’t even keep his eyelids open! “Where is this place…. What am I doing here… Woah, I’m nominated??? Woah, I’m HOSTING?!?!”
-Best original song performances by Florence Welch & A. R. Rahman, Mandy Moore & guy from “Chuck”
Beautiful performances but WAYYYYY TOO EFFING SHORT.
-Closing thoughts
Forgettable, disappointing, whack, unfunny, all over the place, and not enough spectacle. The autotunethenews segment was cute but it felt so out of place and desperate. And speaking of desperate, James Franco in drag? And still he looked out of it!
Please bring back Chris Rock or Ellen Degeneres, tell Celine Dion to stay home, and make fun of the nominees more, like this!
